From spring 2027, employers with 250 or more employees will be legally required to publish an Equality Action Plan that includes steps to support employees experiencing menopause.

76% of teachers are female, 92% of teaching assistants, 94% of administrative staff. A significant proportion fall within the typical perimenopause and menopause age range of 45–55 - often the most experienced and hardest to replace.

Only 17% of teachers report that their school has any menopause policy (NASUWT Wellbeing Survey, 2024). A DfE omnibus survey found that 59% of female school leaders had experienced perimenopause or menopause symptoms, yet 57% reported using no workplace adjustments at all.

The 250-employee threshold is calculated at trust level (the trust is the single legal employer). Most MATs of more than three or four schools will comfortably exceed this threshold when teaching assistants, administrative staff, site staff, and central team employees are included.

A strong menopause action plan is built on six practical components. None requires significant expenditure. All require genuine commitment.
